FROM POTENTIAL TO POSSIBILITY

A person’s past can tell part of their story. It doesn’t always tell you what they’re capable of becoming. For young people in the juvenile justice system, traditional hiring signals can make that potential difficult to see. Limited work history, imperfect resumes, and past circumstances can overshadow the behavioral strengths and aptitude that may point toward a successful career.

This initiative started with a different question: What if we looked at potential first?

FitFirst helped make that possible by assessing behavioral fit, aptitude, and potential—and using those insights as the foundation for a personalized career pathway. From there, a network of partners came together to provide the training, skills validation, and employer connections needed to turn potential into opportunity.

The result was an ambitious, first-of-its-kind effort to help young people move from the juvenile justice system toward meaningful careers.

A Person Isn’t Their Resume

Too often, an imperfect resume becomes a reason to overlook a capable person. For young people in the Florida Department of Juvenile Justice (DJJ) system, that can mean opportunities are limited before they have a chance to demonstrate what they can do.

FitFirst approached the challenge differently.

By assessing each young person’s behavioral profile, aptitude, and potential, FitFirst helped identify career pathways aligned with their strengths and with in-demand opportunities. Rather than allowing limited experience or past circumstances to determine what someone could do next, the process began by understanding where that person was most likely to fit and thrive.

That distinction matters. Interests can change. Aptitude provides a more steadfast signal of career compatibility.

And once the team understood the person, it could ask a more useful question: Where could this person succeed? That mindset opened the door to finding great people in surprising packages, and became the foundation for everything that followed.

How Might We?

Creating a pathway from juvenile custody to employment was not a straightforward undertaking. It required DJJ, FitFirst, Florida Trade Academy (FTA), VALID-8 by Vametric, and employer networks such as the Independent Electrical Contractors (IEC) of Florida to rethink what was possible at each stage.

When the conventional answer might have been “That won’t work here” or “We’ve never done that before,” the partners kept asking: “How might we?”

That mindset shaped a learner-centric pathway designed around the individual rather than around the limitations of the system.

The Journey

ASSESS & ALIGN → TRAIN → VALIDATE SKILLS → EMPLOYMENT

  • FitFirst assessed behavioral profile, aptitude, and potential to identify a career pathway aligned with each participant’s strengths.
  • Florida Trade Academy provided targeted pre-apprenticeship training, combining instruction with hands-on experience—teaching the right skills to the right person at the right time.
  • VALID-8 by Vametric helped participants build growing, shareable skills portfolios that provided evidence of their competencies and progression.
  • Employer and industry relationships created the destination: paid apprenticeship opportunities and a potential path toward long-term employment.

Together, the partners created a progression from understanding potential to developing it, demonstrating it, and putting it to work.

Youth Montalvo: From “In the System” to “On a Path”

The impact of that approach becomes clearest through the experience of the young people it was designed to serve.

When Youth Montalvo first entered the juvenile justice system, he was shy, shell-shocked, and unsure of himself. He did not have a traditional resume pointing toward a career, and his future was difficult to see clearly.

It would have been easy to focus on what was missing. Instead, FitFirst helped the team look at what was there.

Through his behavioral assessment at Florida DJJ, Montalvo was consciously guided toward a personalized pathway aligned with his strengths. His past did not disappear, but it no longer had to be the only lens through which his potential was viewed.

Then the process began to build on that potential.

Montalvo progressed through structured instruction and developed technical skills. As he moved through the pathway, he also developed something less tangible but just as important: a stronger understanding of himself and greater confidence in what he could do.

The change was significant. He started the journey shy, shell-shocked, and uncertain. He emerged confident, self-aware, and sustainably employed, with a career path ahead of him.

For Montalvo, the outcome wasn’t simply a job. It was a different understanding of what might be possible for his future. His journey—from “in the system” to “on a path”—shows what can happen when potential is recognized, given direction, and supported with the right opportunities.

When Potential Gets a Chance

The initiative demonstrates what can happen when organizations are willing to challenge conventional assumptions about who is ready for opportunity.

FitFirst’s role began with understanding the individual: identifying behavioral fit and aptitude that traditional hiring signals might not reveal. The partners then built on that insight with training, evidence of ability, and connections to employers.

But the most meaningful outcome is what happens on the other side of that process.

A young person discovers strengths they may not have recognized before. They build confidence by developing skills. They see a career pathway where there may once have been uncertainty. And employers gain the opportunity to recognize capable people they might otherwise have overlooked.

Montalvo’s story is one example of that possibility.

When we look beyond the resume, we may find potential where others have only seen limitations.
